COVID-19 UPDATES & RESOURCES:

Our office is currently closed with all staff working remotely.

Please call our office at (319) 377-8993 or email [email protected] to be connected to our team.

We are still interviewing volunteers remotely! Now  is the perfect time to get the process started, so you're ready to be matched with a child this summer!

Visit http://www.bigcr.org/be-a-big/ or email [email protected] to schedule your online interview!

We are thinking of you during this difficult time!  Please reach out to our office if you are in need of resources not listed here and we will do our best to connect you.

Here are some important resources as well as more match activity ideas:

  • If you do not file taxes you may still be eligible for a stimulus check. The website walks you through eligibility and entering direct deposit information.

Unemployment specific to COVID-19: https://www.iowaworkforcedevelopment.gov/COVID-19

  • If you have lost your job or are still working but only partially and your income has been forced to decrease due to COVID-19 you may be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Legal: The Iowa COVID-19 Legal Hotline 1-800-332-0419 operates M-F 9-4
  • Free service available to Iowans who are experiencing legal issues due to the public health crisis. Iowans experiencing any type of legal problem related to the coronavirus/COVID-19 crisis, such as facing eviction, being denied unemployment benefits, experiencing employment issues, or being a victim of identity theft can call. Callers will leave a message and Iowa Legal Aid staff will call them back. Those who meet Iowa Legal Aid’s guidelines will be connected with an Iowa Legal Aid attorney; those who are outside of Iowa Legal Aid’s guidelines will be connected with volunteer attorneys through the Iowa State Bar Association and the Polk County Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Project.

  • If you don't have Facetime, try Google Duo or Zoom for video connections!
  • Free multi-player phone app games like Words with Friends, Uno, Draw Something, etc
  • Learn how to draw (https://www.artforkidshub.com/)
  • Journal and share with each other on a weekly phone call.
  • Encourage your Little to enter something on the Gazette page for kids! A new kids’ page is going to run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting March 30. Each page will feature two stories written for kids ages ~8-14, and we’re hoping to also cycle through kid-submitted art, short stories, poems, comics, etc. Do you have a kid in your life who would want to submit something like that? Please have them send that to [email protected]. Each page will be built around a theme, so something related to these (so far) would be best, but if anyone has a theme idea, we’re open to those too! Newspaper/journalism, April Fools, Cats, Pillow fights, Minecraft, Movies, Dogs, Spa day.  They’ll also be writing an advice column each Friday, so if your kids have questions about anything–please send those to us at [email protected].
